Singapore Nursing and Nursing itself.

It has been a super long while since I last posted a post, I have been super busy with work, but highly satisfying. I do procrastinate and lament, but still I love what I'm doing, to a certain extend.

Reason I love Nursing:

1.) It is a highly satisfying job for me, especially in ICU setting, seeing your pt, out of ICU and into a general ward and discharge, it is totally satisfying, knowing that you contributed in the recovery of your patient with your team. Nothing beats that satisfying feeling you get.

2.) You really felt that the money you earn is really through your hard work. You do not feel that it is just another job, everything including the task you do is changing, its alive, never monotonous. It makes your work challenging and meaningful, force you to think, forces you to learn, forces you to be more alert to the sudden changes around you, totally putting yourself to a test, you feel good when you cope well, but when you fail you feel bad, but you may have learnt a lesson that will allow you to better improve yourself.

3.) You learnt patience. You may lose your temper easily back at home, but when you work as a nurse, you learnt how to curb your shortcomings. You learn how to be patient with your team members, your patients and their family member, yes, we do lament a lot, but you still learn these good habits and virtues.

Nursing sounds like a highly challenging and satisfying job, is it true? Yes it is to a certain extend. When you see the reason I may not like nursing may change what you have of this great job.

Reason I MAY dislike Nursing:

1.) Shift work, it is a totally killer, nothing beats this, especially when you switch to from afternoon to morning, it simply sucks. You will really struggle to fight to wake up in the morning, especially if it was a busy afternoon shift the day b4, you reach home you literally, drop dead. Oh man, and because of that, you literally start to lose your personal life, because you are so tired from working, you just want to spend your off day resting at home.

2.) DO and RD, talking about this, you really will hate nursing. You do not have Weekend off like normal office workers. you just get a DO or RD, every 2-3 days of work, end up, your friends are not free to meet up with you, because you off on a weekday, they end work, they tired, Oh my, Oh my, what else can I say ? This aint good for relationships couple with shift work, it is a relationship wrecker job in a way, just my point of view.

3.) Taking MC last min. When consensus are poor, you take MC, your back will be filled with dagger thrown, (personally, i worried abt it today since i took.) Apparently, we were told to predict when we will fall sick so they can redo staff deployment, sometimes, it just sounds ridiculous, but it is happening. and when you take MC too often, you will be the next talk on the lunch table. sadly, office politics do work itself in nursing.

4.) Anual Leave, you got to plan your annual leave 1 year before, and I repeat 1 YEAR before, you cant planned to take your annual leave like 1-2 mths before your decided time you wana travel etc. Yes, this is kidding to the max, and like it or not, it is happening, so what do you think of nursing ?

5.) When you screw up, you get F like nobody's business, nobody like to cover each other ass, smth I personally feel sad about, because if we don't, the whole team gets F too. I believe in give and take, but the policy some how don't work. What can be done about it ? I noticed we tend to get complacent and forgot about the hardship we've been through to reach the stage, that we treat our juniors like crapp, then my question, how would you retain staff or get more people into nursing ?

We cant always depend on "scamming" people over to singapore to work, literally "scamming". Locals are always running away, pay not that attractive as overseas, working environment not that good, work load is crazy, Man, how do you retain local staffs ? I do not know what else to say. Determine for yourself, if nursing will be your cup of tea.

P.S I do love nursing, but with all those bad side, Who knows when we will end up hating it.
